Happy Thanksgiving!

Last year I started a weekly blog that included my surprise fantasy picks for each week of the college football season. Each week I picked the players that were flying under the radar and this year I have continued my weekly surprise fantasy picks. Last week I finished with a 7-5 record including Colorado RB Rodney Stewart who ran for 195 yds and added 49 rec yds with 2 TD's. I also took Clemson's defense and they allowed just 10 pts and 205 ttl yds against Wake Forest. Overall on the season I am 90-38-17 (70%) and had a winning week each and every week!. QUARTERBACKS:
My QB’s of the week are: Matt McGloin, Penn St, Ryan Lindley, San Diego St and Zach Collaros, Cincinnati

Matt McGloin, Penn St-McGloin is completing 60% of his passes with an 11-3 ratio and since he took over as the full-time starter, the Lions have avg’d 486 ypg in their 3 Big 10 wins and he’s had a 7-0 ratio. This week he takes on a Michigan St pass defense that does rank #31 in my pass defensive rankings but is susceptible to giving up some yds (208 ypg). My computer calls for 248 pass yds for the Lions and I think they have a good shot of derailing MSU’s Big 10 title hopes in this one.

Ryan Lindley, San Diego St-Lindley is avg 292 pass ypg (55%) with a 22-14 ratio this season and last week threw for 528 pass yds (321 in 1H) and 4 TD against a solid Utah pass defense. This week he takes on my #109 pass defense in UNLV that is giving up 236 pass ypg (65%) with a 21-5 ratio. My computer calls for 348 pass yds for the Aztecs and I’ll call for Lindley to get near the 300-yd mark as SDSt rolls into the bowl season.

Zach Collaros, Cincinnati-Collaros has quietly had a very good season avg 278 pass ypg (61%) with a 24-7 ratio and last week threw for 366 yds against Rutgers. This week he takes on a Connecticut pass defense that is pretty average allowing 200 pass ypg with a 60% comp rate. My computer calls for 275 pass yds for the Bearcats which would be the 2nd most allowed by the Huskies this year.

RUNNING BACKS:
My RB’s of the week are: Zach Line, SMU, Shane Vereen, California and Daniel Herron, Ohio St

Zach Line, SMU-Line has rushed for 1174 (6.6) and 8 TD’s this season and last week vs Marshall ran for a career-high 202 yds (6.7). This week he takes on a East Carolina defense that is giving up 230 rush ypg (5.3) and last week allowed 410 rush yds (6.8) to Rice as two players topped the 100-yd mark and a 3rd player had 93 yds! I’ll call for Line to easily top the 100-yd mark in this one.

Shane Vereen, California-Vereen has ran for 1062 yds (5.1) and 13 TD’s this season and has added 21 rec (10.1) and 3 TD’s as well. He has been the work-horse since starting QB Riley went down with injury and two weeks ago ran for 100+ yds against Oregon. This week he takes on a Washington run defense that prior to last week gave up 233, 278 and 280 yds and is giving up 208 rush ypg (5.0) on the season. I think Vereen tops the 100-yd mark as my computer calls for nearly 200 yds rushing for the Bears.

Daniel Herron, Ohio St-Herron easily leads the Buckeyes in rushing with 885 yds (5.2) and 14 TD’s this season. He has been the workhorse of late for the Bucks avg 124 rush ypg (6.4) the last three games and this week takes on a Michigan defense that gave up 359 rush yds (6.2) to Wisconsin last week and 315 rush yds to Illinois a couple of weeks ago. My computer calls for 277 rush yds for the Buckeyes and I think Herron easily tops the 100 yd mark and gets to 1,000 yds on the season.

WIDE RECEIVERS:
My WR’s of the week are: Aldrick Robinson, SMU, Dane Sanzenbacher, Ohio St and Eric Page, Toledo

Aldrick Robinson, SMU-Robinson leads the Mustangs with 52 rec (20.3!) and 11 TD’s and is one of the premier big-play WR’s in the entire country that you may not heard of. This week he goes up against an East Carolina pass defense that allows 251 pass ypg with a 27-9 ratio. I’ll call for Robinson to have a big day here as my computer calls for nearly 300 pass yds for the Mustangs.

Dane Sanzenbacher, Ohio St-Despite not being one of the fastest or biggest WR’s in college football, there are very few that make as many clutch plays as Sanzenbacher does. He leads the Bucks with 49 rec (16.7) and has 9 TD’s and clearly is QB Pryor’s go-to WR on 3rd down. This week he goes up against a Michigan secondary that allows 264 pass ypg and is #95 in my pass defense rankings. My computer calls for 263 pass yds for the Buckeyes and I think Sanzenbacher can top 100 yds in this one.

Eric Page, Toledo-Page easily leads the Rockets with 82 rec (11.6) and 6 TD’s and has been new QB Owens go-to-guy the past couple of weeks with a comb 16 rec (11.1) and 2 TD’s. This week Page goes up against a Chippewa secondary that ranks #91 in my PDR giving up 194 pass ypg with a 12-4 ratio. Page should easily get 100+ all-purpose yds in this one as the Rockets move to 8-4 and wait to here their bowl destination.

DEFENSES:

My Top Defenses of the Week: Arizona St, California and Georgia

Arizona St vs UCLA-While the Sun Devils defense has given up 400+ yds the last two outings, they did hold a high-powered Stanford offense to just 17 points. This week they take on a UCLA offense that gained just 163 total yds in their last outing against a Washington defense that had been giving up an avg of 439 ttl ypg coming in! UCLA has battled QB injuries all season and against Washington they used 3 different QB’s and they combined for a dreadful 6 of 25 for 55 yds! ASU has the advantage of a late season bye and easily could be much better than their record indicates with 4 losses by 4 pts or less. They tend to lean on their defense at home as they are allowing just 314 ypg and 18 ppg in their backyard and my computer calls for just 228 ttl yds and 9 points for the Bruins.

California vs Washington-The Bears defense has been really tough at home this season allowing just 248 ypg. Two weeks ago they held and Oregon offense to 15 pts (7 came off ST’s) which was nearly 40 ppg below their avg and just 324 ttl yds which was nearly 250 yds below their season avg as well. This week they get a Washington offense that has been a bit of an disappointment this season and prior to last week (321 yds) had three straight games where they were held to under 290 ttl yds. My computer calls for just 250 yds for the Huskies this week and I think Cal could easily roll in this game.

Georgia vs Georgia Tech-The Bulldogs new 3-4 defense has had mixed results this season and the last 6 games have proven that as they have held 4 opponents to under 75 rush yds while in the other two games they allowed 231 and 318 rush yds. This week they take on the nation’s #1 run offense in Georgia Tech but Georgia has several things in their favor. First, they have had an extra week to prepare for the option and last year they held GT to 205 rush yds (more than 100 yds below their ssn avg). They also need a win to clinch a bowl bid and possibly save HC Richt’s job. GT is playing with a backup QB and I think the Bulldogs hold the Yellow Jackets well below their season averages.

Upset of the Week: 3 str upsets and LW another winner with Colorado over Kansas St!

Maryland over NC State

Maryland has won 7 of the L/10 in this series and the home team has won 4 of the L/5. LW the Terps were eliminated from ACC contention with a 30-16 loss to FSU which was very misleading as MD was done in by 4 TO’s incl a fmbl that was ret’d 90 yds for a TD with :36 left. Meanwhile NCSt won its 4th str over rival UNC, 29-25 and like the Maryland game was misleading. NC State was down by 9 when on 4&gl at the 2 a UNC DB tipped a pass back into play and WR Spencer took the ball off his shoelaces for a TD. Graham then took a PR untouched for an 87 yd TD. While the Pack get to the title gm with a win here, I’m going to go with the upset as MD will still play with a lot of emotion on Senior day and have a huge ST edge (#16-104).

The thirteenth week of the college football season is already here and there may be some owners looking for some under the radar fantasy options. In many leagues this week is the championship week of the playoffs, so it is even more important to find that “gem” to use in your lineup. Check out who we think could fill in nicely for fantasy teams in Week 13.


Quarterbacks

TJ Yates QB North Carolina vs. Duke: Yates has been a very pleasant surprise all season long and could keep that going this week against Duke. The Tar Heels struggle to run the ball and have come a pass first team with Yates leading the way. The Blue Devils pass defense is ranked 94th in the country, so expect Yates to find lots of success carving them up like a turkey. Another 300-yard game seems very likely this week.

Garrett Gilbert QB Texas vs. Texas A&M: Both Gilbert and the entire Texas offense have been huge disappointments to fantasy owners this season, but that may change in Week 13. Gilbert is showing signs of life and is coming off a game in which he tallied 323 total yards and 3 scores against Florida Atlantic. The Aggies rank 97th in the nation against the pass and could give up some big plays to Gilbert and the Horns.

Taylor McHargue QB Rice vs. UAB: McHargue proved he is a dual threat QB with 220 yards and 3 scores passing and 93 yards and 1 score on the ground against East Carolina last week. This week’s game against UAB has all the makings of an absolute fantasy smorgasbord, as both defenses are just plain bad. The Blazers come in nationally at 107th against the pass and the Owls come in dead last at 120th, so fireworks can be expected.

Blaine Gautier QB UL-Lafayette vs. UL-Monroe: Gautier is another dual threat QB who has posted 198 yards rushing and 2 scores in the last two games to go along with 440 passing yards and 3 scores. He could post nice numbers this week against the Warhawks. He is worth a look this week for owners in need of a QB with upside.


Running Backs

Marcus Coker RB Iowa vs. Minnesota:  Coker looks to be the main ball carrier for Iowa this week as Adam Robinson is unlikely to play due to a concussion suffered last week against Ohio State. With Minnesota and the 104th rated rush defense up next, Coker could be in line for a big effort. A stat line of 100 plus rushing yards and 1 or 2 touchdowns seem like a good bet against the Gophers.

Anthony Elzy RB North Carolina vs. Duke:  Elzy has posted nice numbers since taking over for the injured Johnny White two weeks ago. He is a huge receiving threat with an incredible 16 receptions over the past two games. The match up with Duke is very enticing and could prove very successful for fantasy owners riding with Elzy in their championship games.

Darriet Perry RB Florida International vs. Arkansas State: Perry has averaged 125 yards per game over the past three contests and has scored 5 rushing touchdowns over that span. Next up for Perry is a horrible Red Wolves rush defense that ranks an abysmal 115th in the country this season. The Golden Panthers could right the hot hand and continue to let Perry carry the offense. He looks to be a strong play this week.

Zach Line RB SMU vs. East Carolina:  Line has been a pleasant surprise to fantasy owners this season and is coming off a 202 yard and 1 score performance against Marshall last week. Those numbers could be duplicated this week against the 119th ranked rush defense of East Carolina. The Pirates have given up a whopping 33 rushing touchdowns on the season and could yield a couple more to Line in Week 13.


Wide Receivers & Tight Ends

Doug Baldwin WR Stanford vs. Oregon State: Baldwin has been the most consistent Stanford wide out all year long and has 219 yards and a score over the past two weeks. He seems to have developed a nice rapport with Andrew Luck and should be targeted often against a suspect Beavers secondary. A trip to the end zone and 75 to 100 yards seem highly possible for this Cardinal receiver in Championship week.

Mark Dell WR Michigan State vs. Penn State: Dell has turned into the top receiving threat for the Spartans and has been putting up some pretty consistent fantasy numbers over the past 7 games. He might not put up huge numbers, but he might be just what owners in a BCS only league are looking for as a #3 WR.

Julio Jones WR Alabama vs. Auburn: Julio is putting up good fantasy numbers over his past 4 games. During that time, he has averaged 109 yards per game receiving to go along with 3 touchdowns. With the 100th ranked Tigers defense coming to town for the Iron Bowl, Jones could be in store for a big game. We are thinking around 100 yards and a score for this athletic freak this week.

Kenny Stills WR Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State: This freshman is really catching on to things and is averaging 79 yards per game and has 2 scores in his past three contests. The “Bedlam” game this week with Oklahoma State could be a very high scoring game and Stills could be a big part of the fun. The Pokes pass defense is ranked 108th in the nation and might lost Stills a couple of times.

Cooper Helfet TE Duke vs. North Carolina: Helfet has been great for a TE over the past four games, grabbing an average of 6 receptions per game to go along with 77 yards per game. He is worth a start this week even against a tough Tar Heel pass defense.


Sneaky Play Defenses

Central Florida vs. Memphis
Boston College vs. Syracuse
Syracuse vs. Boston College
Virgina Tech vs. Virginia
Missouri vs. Kansas
